to extravagant.

A PLACE LIKE NO OTHER
Why Thurlby Domain?
Thurlby Domain is one of those spots that just makes people go “wow” – whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth.
Rare Beauty.
Tucked away in a quiet pocket between Queenstown and Arrowtown, Thurlby Domain is a hidden gem – a truly unique setting of rare beauty. With weathered stonework, heritage farm buildings, and an almost otherworldly calm, it’s easy to see why creatives, couples, and dreamers are drawn here time and time again.
150 Year History.
Thurlby has stood quietly for over 150 years, with its rich past etched into every stone and tree. The Ruins of the original Hallenstein homestead, built in the 1870s, remain a breathtaking focal point – a living relic of a bygone era. From vintage wagon wheels to mature fruit trees, the grounds are dotted with charming historical features that add a depth of character that’s hard to replicate.
Your Space, Your Way.
We’re a dry hire venue, which means you get the freedom to shape your day, your way. Thurlby Domain is a true blank canvas – a stunning backdrop ready for your vision. Whether you’re bringing in your own vendors or selecting from our list of trusted suppliers, you’ve got the flexibility to make it completely your own. No hidden fees, no styling restrictions – just the freedom to create something personal and beautiful.
Location, Location, Location.
Only 16 minutes from Queenstown and 8 minutes from Arrowtown, Thurlby Domain is easy to get to – yet feels a world away. The peacefulness of our Speargrass Flat Road location (arguably one of the most scenic roads in Queenstown) adds to the sense of arrival. Ample on-site parking makes logistics a breeze for guests, and we’re just a few minutes’ drive from Millbrook and Ayrburn – ideal if you’re planning to move to another venue for your reception.
Striking in any Season.
No matter the season, Thurlby Domain is naturally photogenic. Think misty winter mornings, golden autumn leaves, spring blossoms, and dappled summer light through 100-year-old trees. From wide, park-like grounds to charming corners shaded by walnut trees and framed by stone walls, every angle is camera-ready. The flora and fauna shift with the seasons, offering an ever-changing backdrop that’s beautiful all year round.

For small weddings, elopements, or heartfelt gatherings, The Ruins provides a setting that feels like it’s been plucked from a dream.
The weathered stone walls, surrounded by trees older than most buildings in Queenstown, create a romantic and cinematic backdrop that needs little more than your love story. Perfect for those wanting privacy, beauty, and a real sense of occasion.
-
Planning a larger ceremony or celebration? The Ruins can easily host up to 150 guests. With ample space for a marquee on the wide, flat lawn, you can dine under the stars, dance under festoon lights, or lounge by the stream with lawn games and cocktails in hand.
This is a venue that adapts to your vision, offering a stunning base for wedding stylists and event planners to get creative.

For big guest lists and even bigger ideas, The Stables offers a grander footprint. This side of the estate features four beautifully preserved heritage buildings – The Stables, The Red Barn, The Smithy, and The Cow Byer – all centred around a spacious lawn. It’s rustic, it’s charming, and it’s remarkably versatile.
From food trucks and live bands to sit-down dinners and brand activations, this space handles it all with ease and elegance.

The Ruins is also available for photography-only bookings – and it’s no wonder why.
With natural light, textured backdrops, towering trees, and timeless charm around every corner, it’s a dream location for pre-wedding shoots, engagement sessions, editorial projects or brand campaigns. A photographer’s paradise, with very little needed to make it shine.
The Ruins.
Beautifully preserved with exemplary stonemasonry, this site a photographer’s dream. Enchanting in any light, at any time of day, and in any season.
The Stables.
Open parklands, lush woodland, and rustic buildings. This is cobbled charm. With multiple covered options, this venue is great for large parties.
