Old stone walls, established trees and plenty of personality. Both wedding settings at Thurlby Domain bring something special to the occasion, but each has its own feel.
The main difference? The Ruins offers an outdoor setting among historic stonework and park-like grounds, while The Stables brings together restored farm buildings, covered spaces and outdoor areas. Your choice comes down to the atmosphere you love and how you want your wedding to unfold.
Here’s how to find your fit.
The Ruins: an outdoor wedding with history all around
If your wedding plans begin with being outdoors, The Ruins is a good place to start.
Historic stone walls, mature trees and a nearby stream give this setting its character. There’s birdsong, dappled light and plenty to catch your photographer’s eye.
The appeal is partly how much is already here. You might keep your ceremony styling simple, with flowers and seating chosen to complement the surroundings. Or work with your suppliers on a more elaborate design, making the grounds part of the celebration.
The Ruins could suit you if you’re picturing:
An outdoor ceremony framed by historic stonework.
Photographs among old walls and established trees.
A garden setting that feels relaxed and personal.
A wedding where the landscape plays a big part in the day.
There is space for a marquee or tent, with the layout and arrangements to be discussed with the venue and your suppliers.
The Stables: characterful buildings and room to get creative
If stone interiors, cobbled floors and timber details feature on your inspiration board, take a closer look at The Stables.
This setting includes several historic farm buildings. The Stables itself has a high-pitched roof, stone walls and cobbled floors. The Red Barn offers a different feel, with wooden floors and antique details, while smaller buildings add further character to the site.
Together with the outdoor areas, these spaces offer plenty to consider when planning your ceremony or reception. The buildings you use, and how you use them, should be agreed as part of your booking.
You might be drawn to The Stables if you love:
Historic interiors with texture and character.
A rustic setting for a ceremony or catered celebration.
Styling that works with stone, timber and existing architectural details.
Exploring covered and outdoor options for your plans.
A few thoughtful additions can take the look in different directions. Flowers, table linen and lighting are worth discussing with your stylist, along with any permissions or equipment they require.
Start with how you want the day to feel
Before choosing a setting, picture a few ordinary moments within the occasion.
Where will everyone gather before the ceremony? Would you like guests seated for a meal, or are you planning to celebrate elsewhere afterwards? How much moving between spaces would suit your group?
These questions help turn a collection of lovely images into a workable wedding plan.
Write down your three priorities. They might be an outdoor ceremony, easy arrangements for older relatives and time for unhurried photographs. Share those priorities with Thurlby when you enquire, alongside your date and estimated guest numbers.
Ask about the proposed layout and access, particularly if guests need assistance. A visit can help you judge distances, surfaces and the feel of each setting.
What does dry hire mean at either venue?
Both settings operate on a dry hire basis. You hire the venue and arrange the other elements to suit your celebration.
That gives you control over where your budget goes. You might favour a simple setting and spend more on photography or food, or bring in a stylist to develop a detailed design.
Power, potable water, toilets, furniture, décor and staffing are not included in venue hire. Establish what your plans require before booking equipment and services.
Thurlby’s supplier directory can help you begin those conversations. Ask suppliers what they provide, what they need from the site and who will manage setup and collection.
What should you confirm before booking?
For either setting, agree your weather plan, the spaces included and your event timings before finalising suppliers.
Covered buildings at The Stables should not be assumed to provide an automatic backup for a booking at The Ruins. Any alternative arrangement needs to be confirmed in advance.
If you want a reception, discuss it early. Reception bookings are limited, and the published curfews are 9.30pm at The Ruins and 8pm at The Stables. Plan your meal, speeches and transport around the agreed schedule.
You’ll find more practical information in the venue FAQs.
